Over the course of several presidential administrations, the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice have implemented policies and practices that encourage unjust and inhumane decision, resulting in thousands of deportations of individuals who had deep ties to the United States, including people with decades of residence.
Dear President Biden:
The scope and severity of the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system has stranded many community members far from their homes in the United States, facing the prospect of permanent separation from their loved ones and communities. Family members in the U.S. often have been left to unnecessarily struggle in their absence.
Your administration has an opportunity to redress these past wrongs. The U.S. government has the authority to bring home community members unjustly torn from their livelihoods and families. Furthermore, it's possible to do so in an efficient and fair manner that does not burden the immigration system.
The National Immigrant Justice Center proposed a roadmap in April 2021 for your administration to follow through on promises to build trust with immigrant communities and give the unjustly deported a chance to come home. In June 2021, 85 immigrant and civil rights organizations sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in support of this proposal.
Bringing home unjustly deported fathers, mothers, community leaders, veterans, and workers is a critical step toward shifting the U.S. immigration system to one that prioritizes family and community unity. A meaningful chance to come home will also address the racial injustice that permeates the system and instill fairness and legitimacy.
While we have gratefully celebrated the homecoming of some unjustly deported individuals, we believe it is both possible and necessary to extend this opportunity to hundreds more who have been impacted by our country's unfair immigration system.
President Biden, please act now to create a systemic review process that will give unjustly deported community members a meaningful chance to come home.
