Congress just ended a 76-day partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security by passing a funding bill that, for the first time in history, allocated zero annual funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol. This was a landmark victory won by decades of community advocacy and months of mobilizing in the wake of the fatal shootings of Reneé Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis.
But the fight is far from over.
Even without annual appropriations funding, ICE and Border Patrol are drowning in money with over $100 billion in unspent funds from last summer's reconciliation bill, which gutted healthcare and food assistance to supersize the deportation and detention machine. Now, leaders in Congress are trying to hand these agencies tens of billions more: a new reconciliation funding package that would give ICE and Border Patrol $72 billion to spend without guardrails through the end of the Trump administration, on top of what they already have. The White House has set a deadline of June 1st to pass this bill.
We cannot let this happen. ICE and Border Patrol are already locking up community members at record rates, with deaths in detention at catastrophic levels. The Trump administration is expanding immigrant prison camps to warehouse-scale detention sites. Masked agents continue to invade and harm our communities. More funding with no accountability, no transparency, and no restrictions means more of the same violence.
